Guys and St. Thomas Hospital
Mr. Maxwell was appointed Consultant at Guy’s Hospital Trust in 1988 with a remit to develop fetal medicine within the hospital.
He became Clinical Director in 1991 and oversaw the merger of Guy’s and St Thomas hospitals to become Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust (now a Foundation Trust).
Fetal Medicine
Following his consultant appointment Mr Maxwell founded The Fetal Medicine Unit.
As the Director and Lead Clinician Mr. Maxwell has built it to its present level.
The Unit now has three other consultants, 6 other midwife sonographers and 6 other staff performing 8,000 ultrasound scans per year.
In combination with Genetics, Neonatology and the specialist Pediatric services of the Evelina Children’s Hospital, The Fetal Medicine Unit is uniquely placed amongst UK hospitals to supply the complete range of multidisciplinary services essential to the care of high risk pregnancies.
Obstetric and Gynaecology Ultrasound
One of the early adopters of transvaginal ultrasound to assess cervical length in the prediction of preterm labour, Mr. Maxwell has worked closely with Professor Shennan from the Fetal and Maternal Health Research Group.
The Preterm Birth Surveillance Unit within Fetal Medicine undertakes new research in the ultrasound examination of the cervix and Fibronectin screening, helping to improve early warning of preterm birth.
New challenges include the further development of his interest in 3D and 4 D ultrasound, early pregnancy and gynaecology ultrasound.
He is presently developing a new gynaecology ultrasound service using pelvic floor ultrasound to assess women presenting with symptoms of prolapse.
